I will admit that I never knew March 2nd was a national holiday of sorts; National Read Across America Day! This is done in observance of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. March 2nd also happens to be Grandpa Phil’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDPA PHIL!!).
We started our celebration by reading, The Cat in the Hat.
I gave each boy a Dr. Seuss Activity book that I downloaded from Seussville.com. It was 20 pages of learning activities, and the boys had a lot of fun filling out their books. Here’s Thing 1 working on the activity book:

After the boys finish their lessons, I have them read for 15 minutes. They can choose any book from our personal library to read.
Ty chose a book he could read all by himself:

And what “party” would be complete without cake???? So while the boys were doing their lessons, I was whipping up a ‘Cat in the Hat’ cake. I used two cake boxes (4-6 inch rounds). One I left white, the other I added red food coloring to. Then I baked, and stacked the cake:

I didn’t have any white fondant, so I was stuck with white buttercream. I frosted the cake, then added red fondant stripes to make the hat.

While I decorated the cake, Ty played a matching game (Cat in the Hat theme, of course!):

When Cam’s lessons were over, I let the boys have cake for their snack:

Since some may wonder how I cut the cake, I thought I’d take a picture of that too:

I cut that piece in half to make it a reasonable serving size:

Later that night, we finished up our Dr. Seuss celebrations with GREEN EGGS AND HAM (of course!):
We had our usual ice skating day on Wednesday, and back to regular work on Thursday and Friday.
This is Ty with the palm branch he made:
Here’s Cam with a boat he made:
I had more pictures, but I somehow managed to lose them. I’m sure they’ll turn up on some SD card when I least expect it. But for now…that’s how we spent Week 27.

That is the coolest Dr. Seuss cake EVER! My husband teaches first grade and his students would have been in awe.
LOL. I love all the pictures of red-headed boys! Looks like you had a terrific week.
Fun! I love the Dr. Seuss cake too.
When I first clicked on your link I thought your link was wrong because your site looks very professional. I thought I was looking at a private school’s website!
I absolutely love the Cat in the Hat cake! Y’all had a lot of fun learning this week.
